HOLES IN THE WALL COLLECTIVE
holds space for Creative Research, Reflection & Action-
across disciplines and identities to reimagine the complex challenges of our time.
Holes in the Wall Collective operates as a container– one in which any person, problem, theme or direction can pass through. Inviting creatives across disciplines (art, music, film, writing, performance, social activism, education, policy, technology, science, health) and identities (race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, cultural context) to bring their independent contexts, intelligence and specialties into individual incubation and collective cross-over.
We believe that we cannot fully reimagine challenges without diverse intelligence, representation and access and without providing the space to do so. We strive to build, provide and nurture that space.
We understand change does not exist in a vacuum but often we need to leave the pull of our own context in order to experience and model something new. We invite emergent and established thinkers/makers/doers to leave their daily worlds, bring their diverse knowledge and come together in residence. To challenge the expected and expect the challenge.
After four years holding multidisciplinary events in Brooklyn and three years running a Creative Residency Program in rural Pennsylvania, Holes in the Wall Collective is making the leap towards our own property in the Catskills, NY to expand our programming and impact and to build the Holes in the Wall Collective Center for Creative Research, Reflection & Action.
. . .
HOLES IN THE WALL COLLECTIVE works to hold SPACE most conducive to Creative Research, Reflection & Action. Space that can hold creative work across disciplines. Space for individual incubation and collective cross-over.
As a curatorial organization, we design our programming to be THEMATIC, based on the current global temperature– a most pressing area that needs our collective attention and creative re-imagining.
We bring together a wide collection of PEOPLE across intelligence, disciplines & identities to work on their work and share in collective space. We Invite creative cross-over to happen organically in collective spaces, and hold round-tables for people to share their work and offer feedback, critique and perspective.
We are inspired by a Three Sister Approach-* balancing ENVIRONMENT, PEOPLE & IDEAS to provide the best conditions for innovation & creativity. We believe that in order to create lasting, whole picture, and sustainable solutions we must have represented the perspective, context, needs and knowledge of each. We believe that we can create systems where everyone is a benefactor and everyone is doing the work for the whole. We look to learn from those that came before us and to do our best to not reiterate old patterns that do not serve the whole.
We believe not only in putting out the fires that make up our greatest social challenges (housing, poverty, health disparities...), but also and as importantly, creating the conditions so the fire doesn’t have to start in the first place. We are all good at reacting to crisis. It’s in our nature, built into our blood. But envisioning new models and better design is not always possible when the fire is already raging. Holes in the Wall Collective will be a place where people can leave their context to get distance from the crisis and be nurtured and challenged in their creative process.
As Buckminster Fuller states so clearly - You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete. We believe that by bringing together diverse intelligence across disciplines, generations and identities we can build these models.

OUR CORE VALUES
WE BELIEVE IN BRIDGING TOGETHER PEOPLE, IDEAS & MATERIALS. MAKING SPACE FOR OLD WISDOM AND NEW MODELS. PROMOTING UNCANNY PARTNERSHIPS AND UNEXPECTED ENGAGEMENT.
Holes in the Wall Collective works to expand the notion of creativity past the traditional frameworks of the arts and early education, re-framing the notion of creative practice as an integral component to all fields and disciplines. Our programming actively looks at re-valuing the time it takes for creativity and to value its impact beyond capital and human-centered timeframes. We believe this is a necessary step to restore balance of the environment, people and resources.
INTERSECTION OF CREATIVE FIELDS
We believe that to fully address the complex challenges of our time, we need diverse intelligence, representation and access. By bringing together a wide group of creatives across fields and disciplines, we build the opportunity for a whole-system approach to be re-integrated into culture and design.
We work to bring together a width of intelligence, including those on the forefront of established institutions and those working under the radar, individuals across generations, races, social-economic classes, gender identities, cognitive abilities, and marginalized and non-marginalized groups within the context of the US and the globe, reinforcing that we all hold a unique puzzle piece to the whole picture.
INTEGRATION & SPECIALIZATION
We value integrative practice and holistic thinking as much as the work done and insight gained in specialization models. We recognize that each, and perhaps more importantly the interplay between the two, creates the ground for creative reimagining. We hold the space for specialists to integrate with other specialists, as well as for diverse and divergent thinkers to enhance perspectives and outcomes.
EMERGENT & ESTABLISHED
We seek to bridge together emergent and established thinkers, creative practitioners and changemakers. Recognizing that those inside the establishment looking out and those outside the establishment looking in each hold a unique vantage, we believe that the intelligence, wisdom, and perspective needed to create new realities exists in the relationship between the two.
THE INDIVIDUAL & THE WHOLE
We believe in individual autonomy and collective synergy. We believe that by not placing the value on one over the other and instead recognizing the necessity of both, we can begin to live out a reality closer to natural systems. Holding space for both the individual and the group to thrive, we encourage space for individual incubation and collective cross over.
We believe that each generation holds a unique wisdom, knowledge and experience crucial to achieve whole-system solutions. We believe in the integration, interaction and valuing of multi-generational perspectives, especially between Youth and Elders, and that in doing so we can save energy (creative capacity) by not having to re-invent the wheel.
We believe that possibility and impact are intrinsically linked to the design of our products, mentalities and spaces. We look to build and support the re-imagining of spaces, structures and systems that support more equitable realities for people and the planet.
ART AS ESSENTIAL
Art communicates on multiple levels and is invaluable to complicate our conceptions and broaden perceptions. We see tremendous value in integrating the necessity of artistic practice with the necessity for creative work across fields– encouraging a shared identity of being a creative.
CONTEXT & PROCESS, AS MUCH AS OUTCOME
Our programming actively values and gives due time to - understanding context (where something comes from), taking time for process (the journey taken to get to where it is), and weighing outcomes (the end product and its effects).
We look to find and honor the whole value of people, ideas and materials. We believe that we must re-encode our systems of value to include aspects that have traditionally been left out or forgotten and to include whole value measures from the start of our designs.
BALANCE of BASIC NEEDS
We work towards models where the basic needs- environment (water, soil, sun, air), food, clothing, shelter are met, increasing access to creative practice. Once the basic needs are met, human energy (or creative capacity) can be freed up and directed into new areas of living.
EQUITY & INTEGRITY
Oppression is never isolated and no problem can be solved independently from one another. We believe lasting change cannot occur without representation, access and sustainability for ourselves, those around us and our environment. We seek to create equitable models through our programming, structure and governance.
